I’m sure like most of us you look with anticipation to the little cookie served at the end of your meal when you go eat Chinese food. Unwrapping it and seeing the little white strip sticking out and wonder if it will give you any good news. You break the little golden holder of fortune and take the little slip of paper and for a quick moment wonder “what if”. What if the message you read actually is real. But as you read the fortune you quickly realize you’ve been duped. You realize that there is no truth at all in what is on your slip of paper and you dismiss it quickly and try to find some sort of enjoyment in eating this little golden, somewhat tasteless cookie. I was thinking how many times we do this and even laugh at the silliness of it.
There comes a time in our lives when we need to hear good news, we need to hear a message of hope. It is when we find ourselves in hopeless situations that we can turn to the Bible and find messages of truth that will not leave us feeling duped or let down.
These little messages of hope found all throughout the Bible are God’s promises. The amazing thing is that every promise is true. 2 Corinthians 1:20 says;
“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.”
Paul is in essence making a comparison in God’s decision making process with man’s. You see as humans we have a substandard process of deciding things. Sometimes our yes is actually no. Sometimes we mean one thing and say another. But what Paul is saying here is that all the promises you find in the Bible are true. They are real, you can count on them, you can rely on them, you don’t have to wonder if God really meant what he said. What an amazing revelation to know that if God spoke it, then he will do it.
So promises like “I will never leave you nor forsake you” found in Deuteronomy 31:8 brings much comfort when you realize the gravity of truth behind it.
So the next time you read a verse of promise, don’t dismiss it like it wasn’t meant for you, claim it, take hold of it and know that God himself spoke it over your life.
